The NW (North Western) postcode area, commonly referred to as the London NW postcode area, is a collection of 13 postcode districts that encompass around 13,895 active postcodes in a region of northwest London, England. It is the replacement for the NW sector, which was first established in 1856 as a part of the London postal district. All of London's postcode districts (seven radial, which are big, and two innermost, which are considerably smaller) became publicly subdivided in 1917, and they were given names based on the locations of the delivery offices in each district.
Except for two districts, which use all available sectors for regular addresses and have their own separate non-geographic districts: NW1W for PO boxes in NW1 and NW26 for PO boxes in NW10, each NW postcode district assigns PO boxes to a specific postcode sector.
With the NW2โ11 postal districts extending outward to the northwest, postcode district NW1 lies in the center of London. The boundaries of the region and its numbered districts have evolved throughout time as a result of Royal Mail's operational needs. Since they are not connected to the local authority regions serviced, a locality name may refer to several places. Large portions of the London boroughs of Barnet, Brent, and Camden are included in the postcode area, along with small portions of the City of Westminster, Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham, Harrow, Islington, and Kensington & Chelsea. The NW7 district is a reflection or imitation of Hertfordshire's near edge that extends as far as Scratch Wood.
