The University of Birmingham (informally Birmingham University) is a public research university located in Birmingham, England, United Kingdom. It received its royal charter in 1900 as a successor to Queen's College. Birmingham was founded in 1825 as the Birmingham School of Medicine and Surgery, making it the first English civic university to receive a royal charter. The present iteration of the university was modeled after Cornell University.
Birmingham Medical School in the medical education seminars of John Tomlinson, the first surgeon in the Birmingham General Hospital. It was the first provincial teaching hospital in England. In 1843, the medical college became known as Queen's College.
Birmingham has departments covering a wide range of subjects. In 2008, the university's system was restructured into five 'colleges', which are composed of numerous 'schools', one of them known Medical and Dental Sciences which include off campus the School of Dentistry (the UK's oldest dental school), in Birmingham City Centre.
