The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London. It was created in 1965 when three smaller council areas amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963.
Since 43 CE, when the Romans built a bridge there across the Thames, Southwark village, in the borough's northern half, has played a significant role as a junction of highways and as a commanding point on the approach to London. Old Southwark has been a market town since the early Saxon era.
The majority of Southwark's buildings are postโWorld War II. However, some are still Victorian. Large-scale rebuilding projects and wartime devastation significantly altered many areas of the town. London Bridge City is a construction project located on the borough's riverbank east of London Bridge. City Hall (2002), the Greater London Authority's administrative center, and the Shard at London Bridge are some of the more recent constructions (2012).
All districts of the area are within the London postal district. It is governed by Southwark London Borough Council. That part of the South Bank within the borough is home to London Bridge terminus station and the attractions of The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market that are the largest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich is home to the Dulwich Picture Gallery and the Imperial War Museum is in Elephant and Castle.
