Dental Inlay and Onlay patients

Dental inlay or onlay patients are generally those who require restoration for cavities that are located within the central portion of a tooth, particularly in the tooth's trench. These cavities represent moderate tooth decay that has not progressed extensively.

Inlays are an appropriate choice when the damage of the tooth is too significant for a simple filling but not severe enough to necessitate a crown restoration. They are often recommended for those patients that have experienced broken, fractured, or decayed teeth. Onlays are suitable for patients with more extensive damage that includes the cusps or the biting surface of the tooth. When the decay or fracture surround the tooth's area these restorations are used to replace lost tooth tissue. Both inlays and onlays are indirect restorations, meaning they are fabricated outside of the mouth and then cemented into place. They are known for their durability and strength, offering a balance between conservation of tooth structure and restoration durability.

Patients who might not be suitable candidates for inlays and onlays include those with poor oral hygiene, active caries, or parafunctional habits like bruxism. These conditions can compromise the success of the inlays and onlays.
